I can trade B shares via my HSBC HK account but I want to know if it is possible to trade A shares at the SSE online as an overseas investor, similar to the way I use my TDA acct to trade US listed shares.

You cant buy A shares unless you are a Chinese citizen, and Chinese citizens can only buy A shares in the Shanghai exchange. The Chinese government has set up the exchanges this way. There has been talk that it will be changed, but there has been no confirmation by the Chinese government.
