When people trade which index they call as their benchmark?

DOW, S&P500 are the common benchmarks used for US stocks.
The NASDAQ composite is more common benchmark for tech stocks.

However, there are many more indexes that are used as a benchmark for stocks in particular sectors or countries. MSCIBarra is the most common provider of specific sector or regional indexes. Russel is another index provider. Often it is better to compare a stock to an index of like stocks rather than a broad market index.

Professional stock traders usually use the S&P500 as their benchmark index. However, much of the general public use the Dow Jones as their standard of measurement for the stock market.
