Short term investments?

Postby eth » Mon May 06, 2013 4:57 pm

Okay so I entered a Stock Market simulator competition for this club I'm in at school and I really want to do well. I have until december 16, 2011 to beat the S&P 500 index by as much as we can. To do so, I was given $100,000 (fake money of course) to trade in real time. So far I've bought stock in copper and gold, a turkey company, an entertainment company, as well as an energy company. Though I have invested in a large range of industries, all my purchases have been for thought out reasons; I'm not just buying random stock in random companies. One of the main ways I've been looking at who and what I want to invest in is the recent growth, percent change, and the cost of one share.
And so, my question is, what companies will be a good short term investment and will have the biggest payoff between now and december 16. The industry doesn't really matter, but it would be very helpful if you backed your claim/s with some reasoning. Also, does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks so so much!!

Short term investments?

With a game, you buy (or sell short) the most speculative stock or ETF you can find in order to bank huge returns with complete disregard for risk or preservation of capital. If you lose it, it was nothing anyway and all for fun.

If you want to zoom your account through boom and bust, you want stocks with a high beta.
You can find 3X ETFs here. I suggest UPRO if you think the market will be gaining, or SPXU if you think the market is going down.

The Dow and S&P have been locked in a range for the past two months. Look for a breakout of this range before going all in.

If you want to learn something useful and apply it for the rest of your future, read a book or ten, develop a trade plan, then trade the plan exactly as it is written. Make adjustments as needed.

Just type "stock market game" in the Search Y! Answers bar above and you'll get several answers. Or type in "best stocks to buy" or "how to invest" or something like that.

Short term investments?

Gold and Silver have been on the rise recently, they are good bets. Any company that has a product due out during the week of Dec. 16th also. Need to do some research.
