It is a place where stocks are traded in companies. If you have seen a stock of a company you can buy it on an exchange. If you buy it on your computer, the computer is sending a signal through the internet that says, "buy these shares on an exchange"

The NYSE, AMEX, CBOE, NASDAQ, these are all exchanges.

Stock Exchange is a marketplace for buying and selling stocks of listed companies. You can also buy stocks over the counter but that will jot provide you the benefit of liquidity, price discovery and transparency. All the companies which opt for raising money from general public and makes them shareholder in the company gets listed on one or more stock exchanges.

For example when facebook raised money from public it got listed in NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). Now you can freely buy and sell shares of FB at the then prevailing market price.

Some of the biggest stock exchanges in the world are NYSE, NSE, BSE, LSE etc.
